The P700-million battery storage project marks a major step in MGEN’s push to boost grid stability in the Visayas and support the country’s energy transition. Construction is set to begin this September, with the first 25 MW expected to go online by the second quarter of 2026.
Full completion of the 49-MW facility is slated for 2027, subject to regulatory approvals. “Our signing marks another important step in our efforts to strengthen the country’s energy system,” said MGEN President and CEO Emmanuel V. Rubio.
Battery energy storage will be critical in managing variability in supply and demand, particularly as we integrate more renewable energy into the system.” said Emmanuel V. Rubio, President and CEO of MGEN. The Toledo project is its second BESS project in the country.
COMPLETION of the first phase of Meralco PowerGen Corp.’s (MGEN) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Toledo, Cebu, is targeted for 2026, with full completion eyed the following year. The first phase has a 25 megawatt (MW) capacity, while full capacity is 49 MW.
“Together with forward-thinking partners, we are ready to shape and strengthen a robust green energy system in the Philippines and Southeast Asia,” he added. SUMEC Philippines General Manager Lennon Zong highlighted the role of advanced storage in the Philippines’ clean energy journey.

The global commercial and industrial container energy storage market is experiencing unprecedented growth, with demand increasing by over 450% in the past three years. Containerized storage solutions now account for approximately 55% of all new commercial solar installations worldwide. North America leads with 45% market share, driven by corporate sustainability goals and federal investment tax credits that reduce total system costs by 35-40%. Europe follows with 38% market share, where standardized container designs have cut installation timelines by 70% compared to traditional solutions. Asia-Pacific represents the fastest-growing region at 55% CAGR, with manufacturing innovations reducing container system prices by 25% annually. Emerging markets are adopting container storage for remote power, construction sites, and emergency backup, with typical payback periods of 2-5 years. Modern container installations now feature integrated systems with 100kWh to multi-megawatt capacity at costs below $450/kWh for complete container energy solutions.
Technological advancements are dramatically improving container energy storage performance while reducing costs for commercial applications. Next-generation container management systems maintain optimal performance with 60% less energy loss, extending system lifespan to 25+ years. Standardized plug-and-play container designs have reduced installation costs from $1,200/kW to $600/kW since 2022. Smart integration features now allow container systems to operate as virtual power plants, increasing business savings by 45% through time-of-use optimization and grid services. Safety innovations including multi-stage protection and thermal management systems have reduced insurance premiums by 35% for commercial container installations. New modular container designs enable capacity expansion through simple container additions at just $400/kWh for incremental storage. These innovations have improved ROI significantly, with commercial container projects typically achieving payback in 3-6 years depending on local electricity rates and incentive programs. Recent pricing trends show standard industrial container systems (100-200kWh) starting at $45,000 and premium systems (500kWh-2MWh) from $200,000, with flexible financing options available for businesses.
