Cambodia’s grid-scale solar development started with just a 10 MW pilot in 2017. Today, nine solar power plants are connected to the national grid and are capable of producing up to 444 megawatts (MW), according to the Stimson Center’s Mekong Infrastructure Tracker.
Phnom Penh, Cambodia — Cambodia is on track to significantly boost its solar energy share, with new figures projecting solar to make up 7% of the country’s electricity supply by 2025. This equates to a total installed capacity of 530.14 megawatts (MW) —a major leap from 3.2% in 2023 and 4.6% in 2024.
Searching for alternative options, Cambodia joins a growing list of national governments who have come around to seeing solar and other distributed, emissions-free renewable energy resources as a cost-effective means of achieving national electrification, as well as national and international climate change and renewable energy, goals.
Despite facing significant challenges, Cambodia possesses several advantages that would support the continued development of its solar panel industry. Cambodia can diversify its export destinations from the U.S. to developing economies, such as those in the Middle East or Africa who are transiting to greater use of renewable energy.
The government is boosting building new energy plant projects to generate clean energy for the grid, said Keo Rattanak, Minister of Mines and Energy. The projects will increase Cambodia’s share of clean energy generation capacity to 70 percent by 2030 from more than 62 percent at present, Rattanak said.
For decades, Cambodia’s high economic growth has been fueled by strong garment exports, supported by tourism. However, a new trend in the country’s exports has emerged in the past two years – a sharp increase in electrical and electronics (E&E) manufacturing products, particularly solar panels.

The global commercial and industrial container energy storage market is experiencing unprecedented growth, with demand increasing by over 450% in the past three years. Containerized storage solutions now account for approximately 55% of all new commercial solar installations worldwide. North America leads with 45% market share, driven by corporate sustainability goals and federal investment tax credits that reduce total system costs by 35-40%. Europe follows with 38% market share, where standardized container designs have cut installation timelines by 70% compared to traditional solutions. Asia-Pacific represents the fastest-growing region at 55% CAGR, with manufacturing innovations reducing container system prices by 25% annually. Emerging markets are adopting container storage for remote power, construction sites, and emergency backup, with typical payback periods of 2-5 years. Modern container installations now feature integrated systems with 100kWh to multi-megawatt capacity at costs below $450/kWh for complete container energy solutions.
Technological advancements are dramatically improving container energy storage performance while reducing costs for commercial applications. Next-generation container management systems maintain optimal performance with 60% less energy loss, extending system lifespan to 25+ years. Standardized plug-and-play container designs have reduced installation costs from $1,200/kW to $600/kW since 2022. Smart integration features now allow container systems to operate as virtual power plants, increasing business savings by 45% through time-of-use optimization and grid services. Safety innovations including multi-stage protection and thermal management systems have reduced insurance premiums by 35% for commercial container installations. New modular container designs enable capacity expansion through simple container additions at just $400/kWh for incremental storage. These innovations have improved ROI significantly, with commercial container projects typically achieving payback in 3-6 years depending on local electricity rates and incentive programs. Recent pricing trends show standard industrial container systems (100-200kWh) starting at $45,000 and premium systems (500kWh-2MWh) from $200,000, with flexible financing options available for businesses.
