Combined, these projects represent 577 MW of solar capacity along with 105 MW of co-located battery storage. German energy group RWE AG (ETR:RWE) has secured planning permission for its Byers Gill solar plus storage project in the UK, marking the company’s largest consented co-located solar and battery storage project in the country.
The PV project was the UK’s first transmission-connected one, and with the addition of the BESS it will become the first solar and storage one too, Cero claims. It was co-developed with developer Enso Energy.
Introduction The UK’s solar energy and battery storage sector is undergoing a rapid transformation, bolstered by ambitious climate targets and supportive policies. Solar photovoltaics (PV) capacity has rebounded since the end of feed-in tariffs, while energy storage is scaling up to enhance grid reliability.
In the UK, RWE has 11 solar projects under construction and recently brought online its first UK solar site, Langford. Combined, these projects represent 577 MW of solar capacity along with 105 MW of co-located battery storage.
RWE has 11 solar projects under construction in the UK and earlier this month marked the energisation of its first UK solar site, Langford. Together, these construction and operational projects total 577 MW (AC) alongside 105 MW (AC) of co-located battery storage. The global commercial and industrial container energy storage market is experiencing unprecedented growth, with demand increasing by over 450% in the past three years. Containerized storage solutions now account for approximately 55% of all new commercial solar installations worldwide. North America leads with 45% market share, driven by corporate sustainability goals and federal investment tax credits that reduce total system costs by 35-40%. Europe follows with 38% market share, where standardized container designs have cut installation timelines by 70% compared to traditional solutions. Asia-Pacific represents the fastest-growing region at 55% CAGR, with manufacturing innovations reducing container system prices by 25% annually. Emerging markets are adopting container storage for remote power, construction sites, and emergency backup, with typical payback periods of 2-5 years. Modern container installations now feature integrated systems with 100kWh to multi-megawatt capacity at costs below $450/kWh for complete container energy solutions.
Technological advancements are dramatically improving container energy storage performance while reducing costs for commercial applications. Next-generation container management systems maintain optimal performance with 60% less energy loss, extending system lifespan to 25+ years. Standardized plug-and-play container designs have reduced installation costs from $1,200/kW to $600/kW since 2022. Smart integration features now allow container systems to operate as virtual power plants, increasing business savings by 45% through time-of-use optimization and grid services. Safety innovations including multi-stage protection and thermal management systems have reduced insurance premiums by 35% for commercial container installations. New modular container designs enable capacity expansion through simple container additions at just $400/kWh for incremental storage. These innovations have improved ROI significantly, with commercial container projects typically achieving payback in 3-6 years depending on local electricity rates and incentive programs. Recent pricing trends show standard industrial container systems (100-200kWh) starting at $45,000 and premium systems (500kWh-2MWh) from $200,000, with flexible financing options available for businesses.
