Bulgaria has installed between 40 MWh and 50 MWh of battery energy storge capacity to date. However, new national legislation as well as funds provided through the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) could add another 1 GWh of storage capacity over the next two years.
Another development that can boost battery storage in Bulgaria is a recent update of national legislation to include battery energy storage systems as a component of the grid.
This capacity will be used for both solar peak shaving and grid balancing,” Rangelov said. Bulgaria’s Ministry of Energy is currently running two tenders aiming to commission 1,425 MW of solar and wind generation capacity coupled with 350 MW of behind-the-meter energy storage.
As Europe races toward climate neutrality, Bulgaria’s surge in storage capacity signals a shift not only in national priorities but also in regional energy dynamics.
The selected storage systems will be geographically distributed across Bulgaria and connected either to the national transmission grid or local distribution networks. All awarded projects must be operational by March 2026.
