The BESS project aims to demonstrate the commercial viability of battery energy storage in Vietnam and showcase the practical benefits of renewable energy, including its reliability and efficiency. It also seeks to help Vietnam meet its climate action targets.
“Solar energy is the right choice for Vietnam because it's proven technology that can be quickly and readily deployed, even in challenging sites,” she adds. Vietnam's transition to renewable energy comes as the country's electricity needs continue to increase due to strong economic growth projected at 5-7% per annum over the coming years.
Vietnam’s Eighth National Power Development Plan, published in 2023, also acknowledges that the country’s solar potential is an estimated 963GW of capacity, and the government has since made moves to provide offtake tariffs and better enable onsite self-consumption.
Under Vietnam's Power Development Plan VIII, the country is looking to phase out coal-fired power generation by 2050 and increase solar power installed capacity to account for 34%, up from 23% in 2022. The Power Development Plan also forecasts that energy storage will increase to 300 MWh by 2030 and 26 GWh by 2050.
Since 2017, the company has been developing and operating renewable energy projects in Vietnam, which include the 252 MW wind project in Quang Binh and the 80 MW solar plants in Khanh Hoa and Dak Lak. In October 2021, U.S. Mission Vietnam awarded AMI AC Renewables a grant of US$2.9 million to spearhead and develop the project.
