There are 2 400 inhabited islands in the EU. Despite having access to renewable sources of energy, such as wind and wave energy, many of them depend on expensive fossil fuel imports for their energy supply. The Clean energy for EU islands initiative, launched in 2017, provides a long-term framework to help islands generate clean energy.
Major players in European solar development include Scatec, Lightsource BP, Gresham House, and Aquila Capital. Along with pushing the energy transition forward, these solar developers are dedicated to innovating more opportunities to mitigate global warming and achieve decarbonisation goals.
The continent has reached a record high of 56 GW worth of solar installations in 2023. That’s enough to power more than 40 million homes. European popularity and adoption of solar developments have led many European countries to increase their solar energy capacity. Europe’s leading solar market is Germany with a 47% capacity increase in 2022.
